Black bear calling can be very affective if done properly. The most important rule of calling is : don’t stop, whatever you do, don’t stop because if you do, the bear will lose his interest. If you spot a black bear and want him to approach you in order to get a better chance of shooting it, calling might do the trick.

The type of terrain in which you will do the calling also is very important; for example, big basins will require longer calling in order to attract black bears in comparison with desert regions; this happens because in desert areas, bears ( generally speaking ) can hear the call from longer distances thus reacting faster; in such cases, bears are known to react in only several minutes.

For regions which are heavily wooded, it is recommended to use electronic calls. Two reasons for choosing this type of calls: they make intense sounds and also they won’t exhaust you after a few minutes. Before using electronic calls, find out if you can use them in the area where you are about to do your hunting. Always call as loud as you can and aggressively right from the beginning.

If you want to call black bears during spring season it is advisable to search for these animals on lower grounds, where the grass is growing. After April & May, they will eat just about everything: road kill, winter kill, grass or an old kill. What you need to do is find out where the black bears are feeding and do everything you can so that the road to you will be passed easily by the bears.
